That used to be true. In late 2013, Apple Stores and Apple authorized service providers began replacing batteries.

With Android, a new battery costs 99 cents including shipping, and you just pop off the cover and stick it in. For boondocking, you can carry spare batteries if you want to -- or spend another 99 cents for a car charger.
