My experience with Android phones(had 2 of them with IceCreamSandwich and Jellybean) was the OS's change to the point of making the phones obsolete sooner.
iPhones seem to have a longer life by being able to update to the latest OS.
My fam has/had a iPhone4, 2-iphone5's, 2-iPad mini's (2ndGen), a 3rd Gen iPad, and a 6yr old 3rd Gen iTouch. All share the same/similar OS making it seamless to switch between devices. The iTouch was done at ver5.1 but still works great. All are trouble free which I greatly appreciate.
