Newbie router help, session timing, linksys users here?

You know how most routers you type in 192.168.1.1 to log into the router admin settings. You then have to type in a user and password. My walmart special linksys E1200 times my session out in about one minute before I have to log back in and re-type the user and pass. Anyone know how to change a router session timing to stay logged in to this screen (photo attached) longer? I have searched the linksys support site, searched the PDF manual, google no luck here.

Second, I like to manually (with a mouse click off or on) turn the router wifi off and on, is there a fast way within windows 7 to access the admin screen (photo) without typing in the user and password every time? I looked under Win 7 Networking and sharing center but could not find a way to turn the router wifi off and on in this manner. Thanks.

We also have a Linksys Router. Give em a call, I have always had excellent customer service from them.

  • First, you need to enable "Remember passwords..." in Firefox options. You may also want to enable "Use a master password" which will use Firefox's built-in encryption. Personally, I don't do so as I'm already using a much stronger encryption to protect the browser password database.

You don't really need to configure anything in secure login. Once you've let Firefox remember the password for a particular website or router, then just click the "key" icon in the future, and it will log you in. If you don't see the key icon, then right-click in an empty area next to a tab, and click customize. Drag the key icon where you want.

I don't know the answer, but the best computer related forum on the internet is www.pcmech.com

Somebody there would know the answer, good or bad. Lots of certified network techs hang out there.
  • No setting for router Admin page refresh rate here, bummer. I also use firefox but could not find instructions on how to use the extension secure login. If you right click on the extension and choose "help" it takes you to a page with no mention of secure login extensionhttps://www.abine.com/support.html

The secure login extension page https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/secure-login/ takes you to the developers page with no mention of it either https://blueimp.net/

    Thanks
  • It most likely has to do with cookies. Is there a setting in your router's Admin for page refresh rate? What I think is happening is that when the Admin page refreshes, it can't find the login credentials(cookies) for your router. And so you keep getting the login prompt.

Check to make sure cookies are allowed to be set in your browser. Otherwise, make an exception to allow for cookies at 192.168.1.1, your router's IP address(default gateway).

You might be able to remove the password which would allow directly logging into your router Admin from a bookmark. But, if anyone hacks into your WiFi signal, they could easily access the Admin page. Which would allow them to change all passwords to the router and WiFi, and require a hardware reset to reconfigure your router settings. Still only a small chance if using a strong encryption and password for WiFi access.

I use Firefox and the extension Secure Login which allows one-click access to all my routers and websites.

BTW, I've done some limited testing of Firefox password database, and was not able to capture any using a few popular keyloggers. So comfortable that it's a secure method of password storage, as long as the browser is kept updated, and no vulnerabilities are exposed. I've also hardened the password database itself using Truecrypt.
  • Try the power plug to turn on and off. I don't know about the time out setting.
