Depends on the credibility of those posting the info? Most warning against freezing and opening the drive case tend to be the HD manufacturers and data recovery firms. Those posting that they were successful in doing so tend to be individual users who may have just been lucky.
The question really is should one attempt these suggestions with little chance of success, while likely creating a situation where no other means will now work? It's all, or nothing?
IMO, a wiser position would be to exhaust the suggestions of HD experts first, and then pursue these solutions as a last resort.
