Excuses - Excuses

Can you believe this??
I pick up my 2014 Cougar H.C. 321RES trailer on Friday. I drive home 80+ miles and find out the 2 sets of keys they gave me don't work in the main door??? So I call the dealer back- the sales mgr. suggested I drive back & they will fix the problem. I tell him the diesel fuel to drive round trip would cost more than the door lock would cost. He says don't worry they will pay for the fuel. Then I get a call from their service mgr. who leaves a message for me saying that their technician positively checked the trailer keys before he gave them to me. Like I care if the tech checked them or not. The fact remains the keys don't work. I tried every combination imaginable and I can't lock my trailer. Of course by then they are closed for the holiday weekend.
Tuesday when America goes back to work I'm going to call & SUGGEST they just send me a new door handle/lock assy. with 2 sets of keys and I'll replace the lock and send them the old one back. Simple solution !!!
Just hope I don't get caught up in some bureaucratic mess.
I was in the Industrial Service Industry for 44 years and it still amazes me that people don't understand the K.I.S.S. principle. (Keep It Simple Stupid)
Okay, I feel better, thanks for listening...:B

  • It is good that it is solved. I would have suggested hitting rvlocksandmore.com, buying a Global Link handle and cam set. That way, all your baggage doors, door locks, etc. are on one key, and the key isn't one of the 20-30 that are the standard cuts, as GL keys have different combinations than the usual Trimark or FIC keys.
  • My problem is solved. Few days ago I pulled into General RV in Wixom, Michigan and they gave me a brand new handle lock assy. This Trimark lock only has one key and it fits both the handle lock & dead bolt.
    Looks like this:

great service and am I glad I only have one key to work with.
For 7 years I had the Jayco Eagle 322FKS and I was always fumbling around trying out which key fit which lock in which door. Not anymore. Thanks Trimark oh and Keystone..
    Happy trails,
  • I've had the 321RES for 3 seasons now, and I still can't get the unlock/lock process right the first time!
  • I recently purchased a new 2013 Keystone Cougar also. My problem was that all the locks were bound up or seized. I could barely get the keys into the locks and I was apprehensive about trying to turn them. Several shots of WD-40 resolved the problem but they still feel rough. I think that Keystone has installed some inferior quality locks on their trailers and we get to suffer.

  • I know it is not a trailer, but our door has 2 keys to lock the 2 sections. The main lock key is NOT the same as the deadbolt lock key. It was keyed this way by Tri Mark, the lock manufacturer.
  • Our trailer has 2 doors & uses different keys for each. The storage area has it's own key. If I put the wrong door key in (and it will go in)the wrong door it will not turn. Yes one key will unlock the door & also the dead bolt.
Hope you get this worked out.
  • I'm sorry for your problems but this is a good lesson learned. We had to buy a new TT last fall and once we get through the floor plans and storage we don't pick a unit until we check the company that manufactures the unit and the dealer who services it. If those don't come out A#1 we keep looking. I've spent hours sitting in a service bays waiting room talking to customers and depending on what I hear, defects or owner error, I make my final decision. Hope your problems get fixed to your satisfaction.
  • Do you mean they don't insert into the lock, or do you mean they insert but won't turn, or perhaps do you mean they insert and turn but don't unlock?

I ask because if you mean the one of the first two, then there is indeed a problem, but if you mean the last, the problem is not the keys. Furthermore, both of the two locks on the door use the same key, the other key is for hatches elsewhere, not the entry door.

The two door locks that use the same key do not operate the same way, either. One of them has two positions, and locks the door handle, the other one does not lock the door handle, but runs a dead bolt, and has three positions.

I am not trying to pick a fight here, or suggest that you do not know how these work, but something about the dealer saying they tested the keys and your saying you tried combinations of keys suggested you just might not know how they worked. Having myself fallen victim to my own misunderstanding of things mechanical in the past and the frustration that causes. . . .

Anyway, if I am wrong here I apologize. But if you can stick one key in either lock and turn it, and one of the locks actually frees up the handle, then you have the right key. You just need to use that same key in the other lock too, and one position of the three will retract the deadbolt and let you in.
  • Bill, hope the dealer does not turn you off on the HC 321 RES. We are camped out this weekend in the rain and loving ours every minute!!! Anxious to hear how you come out on the sleeper couches as we are thinking of replacing jack knife couch on the kitchen side.

  • You didn't lock the door when you towed the trailer? I would think you should have the opposite problem being locked out.
