Non-subscription DVR?
I would like to get a nice small DVR for the Mother Ship but all I see are those requiring a subscription. I have NO interest in paying by the month - rather I want to own my own. Suggestions? ...

We have and use the Magnavox HDR55 1TB unit and does all we could ask for. Records in HD on HD and DVD, will dub from HD to DVD, has a digital OTA tuner, accepts both phono and HDMI inputs, and you can watch one previously recorded program while recording another. Not cheap, but IMO the most flexible and capable DVR available for actual ownership.

YOU ARE CORRECT, the Magnavox only records in SD on the HD or DVD and not in HD, SORRY I don't know where I got that ... MY Mistake. I might have been thinking of the various Hard Drive recording format qualities you can select.
I have gone back and make note of my mistake in the original post to reflect this error.
In any even it still does everything we could want or ask for in a standalone DVR.
