Non-subscription DVR?

I would like to get a nice small DVR for the Mother Ship but all I see are those requiring a subscription. I have NO interest in paying by the month - rather I want to own my own.

Suggestions?

  • If you want to record Sat TV, the options change, devices listed will not record Sat, only OTA broadcast
To record Sat.. it is going to be their equipment, or some very expensive special equipment
  • We are currently using Dish as a primary, just this week I was able to connect cable (directly to the TV, not thru internal cabling) and still have OTA available.

So I would most like the satellite to feed the DVR.

How much is your total bill?

This will deepened on your programs you have.
    We also have 2 DVR's in S&B

I've got this one on my Amazon wish list and will probably order it before too long. From what I've been able to see on various review sites, it's about the best one available without paying Tivo.

Looks like it goes the same things my HomeWorx PVR
You have to buy and use an external hard drive just like HomeWorx does
    I love mine

  • I use a small computer with Windows Media Center and OTA TV. Wishing now I had gone with Linux and XBMC (more stable). Nevertheless, it works well for me. Took a while to wean DW off of the DISH, but now she is grateful. Most of what we watch/record is older TV shows that have less smut than the current offerings. BTW, both Windows Media Center and XBMC offer a remote, so you can operate the system from your favorite chair.

  • Sure. You can get one tuner or dual so you can record one channel and watch and record a second one. When my contract runs out I am cutting the cable.
