Norton 360 via internet download or from Best Buy??

We have something in common. :) WordPerfect 12 Home Edition is my last version though. I (sadly) have moved to Google Docs and their cloud as my current preference. Life moves on.

But they do charge for their product. It is a marketing technique to get their product out there. I've used AVG Free for years and never gotten a virus. I installed their paid version for a client for their company's use with the same result.

Do you also pay for Microsoft Office rather than use Google Docs or Open Office? Both of these products are free and are excellent alternatives for word processing and spreadsheets. Google is not a non-profit company.

Ratings are all over the place and depending on who does the rating and what their "agenda" might be one has to read between the lines in these "ratings articles". PC Mag who I sure would trust more than CR for software has Norton, bitdefender and Webroot as their three "editor choices" for overall security with Avast and Avira well down in the pack as were ESET Smart and G Data. Likewise PC World ranks Norton well above the other 4 you mentioned as being highly rated by CR. Below is a quote from the PC Mag aricle re: Avira and G data:

"Avira Ultimate Protection Suite (2014) earned low to average scores in most of our tests, but it proved quite effective at blocking malware attack on a clean system. G Data InternetSecurity 2014 likewise did its best work in the field of malware blocking. "

Of course I'm sort still from the school of thought that you "get what you pay for" and that's one reason when it comes to security I steer well clear of any of these "free" offerings. You will never convince me that you get the same level product "FREE" when others have to charge you for the same thing.

If you buy the CD, it will run a program to go to Norton's site and download the latest version of the software in that package, and probably try to get you to buy something more. Two of the factors that determine price are the number of different programs included (360 is fairly complete for consumer uses) and the number of licenses.

I usually buy the CD packaged for three licenses, simply because it is a bit less expensive than direct purchase of two single licenses.

X2, I've used free Avast for years with no problems.

OK don't laugh. I did buy the CD from BB. But when I got home - I remembered my CD Drive has not worked properly for months. So, with the product key code and Norton's on-line help - installed the latest version of Norton 360 and all's well.
Good to go for another year.
