It could be the surround sound is wired to be muted when the bedroom TV is turned on, so that the two sets can be used simultaneously without the main TV drowning out the sound from the bedroom TV. Do you have a BOMB (box of many buttons) that may allow you to select TV sound or surround sound for the main TV?
