I use disks to store key backup data, but not programs. I figure if my computer drive crashes I will get new software with it or reload from disk I have on hand. Don't have the volume to need the cloud. You could use a portable HD if you want to store more date / programs. Just depends on how much stuff you need to store.
You can reload all your programs from disk (many people don't have the disks to reload for whatever reason) but it's a bit of work. With a system image backup, you can restore your system back to EXACTLY how it was at the time you made the backup. That means bootable, with all of your programs installed and all of your data intact.
