I am of the opinion that online (offsite) backups AND local backups are needed.
First a local backup - either to a usb drive, NAS (network attached storage), or in my case my local file (media) server. This should be done automatically on a regular basis. I personally use a deltacopy software built on rsync (rsync only sends changes). This protects all my systems from the hard drive failure or my grand daughter deleting files after she got bored of the game she was playing. Being local the restore is fast. Although not often I have used this to recover files that I thought I no longer needed. I have also used this to move data to a new computer.
Secondly I backup my server to a cloud provider using Duplicati backup software and Google Drive. It is also an automatic task that runs on my server so I do not have to think about backing up. The files are encrypted so that no one can get see my data if my account is hacked. This backup is my "house burned down" backup. I will probably never use it but it is nice to know it is there in case. The cost has recently went down and is charged by the amount of data you have.
In the past I used a smaller cloud provider but had reliability issues and switched to Google.
On my phone I received a 50 gig account for free with Box so I use that to store the pictures from my phone. I also sync that folder to my desktop and eventually those files end up in my normal backup stream as well.
