OP: Paid online storage is fine. Free online storage is not something I would trust. I'm sure the vast majority of online storage companies are reliable.
I've been on ImageEvent for 4 years at a budget-busting $2 a month. No issues.
Actually the one "free" account STILL works AND my files are still there, just the FEATURE I wanted (which was hot linking) no longer works on that site without paying a yearly "fee"..
I would put ZERO "faith" into ANY online storage as 100% the only and sole method of backing up my files.. Online services come and go and when they go, so does your files.
Moral of my story.. DON'T RELY ON SOMEONE ELSE TO BACK YOUR IMPORTANT FILES..
Why? Pretty simple, they are no longer in YOUR possession and control. Once the Genie is out of the bottle, those files are no longer private nor yours.. others now have the "keys" to your kingdom..
Even if your files have been "encrypted" your files CAN be requested and seized by authorities.. Not to mention encryption CAN be broken..
External drives now days are as good as it gets and are dirt cheap. 1Tera Byte (1TB) are less than $70 and are the size of a cigarette pack...
But feel free to feel good if online storage puts your mind at ease..
