Optimizer Microphone?

¿Funny story about that??

We have a large screen home theater with full surround purchased the proceeds of selling my sloop. (When you are forced to stay home because you are now suddenly responsible for 3 grandchildren, you have to do the best you can.) I set it up with a Sony amp with that capability and balanced it by ear the first time and then it do its thing. The automatic was better for a while. Then it started to sound less good. So I ran the automatic again and it was not as good as I remembered. Well, I will admit that my hearing is going the same way as my memory and some less important things....
Then a grand did something foolish and I had to get behind the rack, while there something did not look as I remembered. I got out the wire list and compared. I couldn't figure out how it got that way. But, I knew would probably change things, so I set up the auto-balance again and sat there reading while it hissed its way around the room until..... SHOUT HISS ..... out of the R & RR set. It cranked each of those back to a more common level.
Later I came to find out the GS#3 (known for messing with things that he should not) "accidentally" pulled some speaker wires loose and DS had put them back - he thought - Well, Everyone has been told (again) to not touch and if something happens, tell Papa when it happens.

And people wonder why I never took them sailing.

Glad it worked out for you.. I've never used an automatic set up amp but I do know how they work..

I have a friend.. He does not use automatic set up either but he does design the systems.. Only his ears are better than the amps.

I have heard what he can do with a recording however.. Magic, pure Magic to someone of my skill level Even if I do know how he does it (Technology) it's still Magic.. I have heard him called the top recording engineer in the US, I can believe it,, For sure he is one of them.

Thanks for the help again. I plugged it in and did the on screen set up this eve. The set up did not like the way I had the speakers hooked up. Went back to the web site and changed a couple of speaker hook ups around and wala the mic and speakers talked to each other and all is well.

So assuming the "thing you plug in the front" is called an Optimizer Microphone.

Some advanced audio amps have the ability to analyze the sound from the speakers, Usually in "Optimize" mode, and automatically adjust several pramaters of the amp so the person sitting where the microphone is gets the best possible expierence. Now some you run the test, and put it away, some do it all the time, I do not know your equipment. . I only know what an Optimizer Microphone is.

STBRetired is correct. It's only used during setup and can be removed once setup is complete. It set the volumes of each speaker so that the system is balanced for the place the microphone is set, i.e. your Lazyboy. It's not required to use to setup but can probably do the best job of trying to get the sound the way the factory wants you to hear it, which may or may not be to your exact taste. I would let the system setup the sound for you using the microphone, and then just tweak it to your liking if necessary, but there is nothing wrong with setting it up manually.

My older system had a corded mic. you put where you sit , it runs its tones in ea speaker and " optimizes " the sound for that listening position then you unplug it and store it somewhere .... It doesn't stay plugged in once it runs its test

Is it called an "Optimizer Microphone"? My Harmon-Karman came with one that was used for setting up the surround sound system. You put it near your "normal" listening position and the receiver runs through a series of tones and pink noise then figures the proper settings for the DSP that controls the surround sound. Adjusts for room acoustics and compensates for a listening position that is not in the textbook optimal position. Works well until DW moves the furniture around.

In a nutshell what is the function of the thing that plugs into the front of the amp that one is supposed to place near him. i can't see having a lead stretched across the floor to the lazy boy.

What would be the effects of just not plugging it in? The instructions say to plug it in before setup.

OK. Is it a "new Sony" or an "ole dinosaur"?

We have no idea what a "thing" is, or to what it plugs in.

Not knowing what "it" is, we can have no idea what effects not plugging "it" in can have.

Can you get us further information?
