i use paper maps, or i might check the route on the computer
when driving i use experience and common sense to watch were i'm going
if doesn't look right .. i stop, and find out why
i do use a program on my phone or tablet to "track" my position show miles covered avg speed etc.
i do NOT have a GPS and do not follow directions from one
blindly following a gps has gotten pople into bad situations,
the news has had several stories in recent years
people trying to use gps directions for a short cut, ending up in barren desert or country side and no way out, vehicle stuck, damaged people dying
as said, its the direction giving software that is the problem
it will send you down a dirt forest service road, or a non existent route that has been abandoned ,
GPS global positioning system
was designed for military location services
tell the marines where they are in the desert, the latitude longitude
then they can look on the map and figure which direction they have to move to link up
knowing where you are is great, having a Machine tell you where to go..is not so great
