I wouldn't travel without a GPS anymore. They are wonderful for getting through congested city driving, and, on interstates, knowing which lane to be in before you have to be in it is a wonderful thing.
I plan my trips on Delorme Street Atlas, transfer it to Basecamp, and upload it to my Nuvi. Then a quick doublecheck to make sure it transferred correctly and didn't add some imaginative routing, and I'm in business.
I've traveled and toured for many years and the GPS is, hands down, leagues better than trying to travel and navigate with paper maps. I used to have my maps in my map case on the tankbag on my bike. Approaching an intersection with a GPS means I just turn in the direction the arrow indicates. I don't have to locate myself on the map, get oriented, and then decide with is the right direction to turn, all of which requires me to look away from the road several times. Nope, not even a close contest.
