Probably a Dumb Question

I've never tethered my iPad to my PC and was wondering if there were any precautions to be taken to prevent loss of data or damage to either one? I assume the charger cord, which has a USB plug on one end is what is used.

See, I told you it was` probably a dumb question.:o

    I am not able to tether my Ipad to my PC. It won't hurt anything to try, but Apple doesn't like to play nice with PC, especially Microsoft. I can connect, but my PC cannot read anything from the Ipad. Very frustrating. I don't use "the cloud" to store anything on. So I've not figured out a way to transfer photos from the Ipad to my PC, to my hard drive back-up either. Ipad doesn't play in the sandbox at all. They've taken their toys and just left the entire playground!
