problem with yahoo

I have yahoo set as my home page on all three of my computers. However, in the last two days it will not redirect to yahoo on one of the computers. I get one of two error messages: "http://failsafe.fp.yahoo.com/404.html" or "bad syntax request".
I have compared the settings on the three computers and don't see a difference. This is a windows 7 pro operating system and I am using firefox as my browser. I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox but it didn't make a difference. Any suggestions?

  • It seems to be Yahoo for me too. It is my home page and has trouble completely loading. Also wont take me to the news sites listed. This has been the case for the last 2 days as well.
  • If I'm understanding this correctly, your issue is with Yahoo home page and not with Mail? For one, if your Yahoo home page was working properly, then suddenly stopped one day, it's likely due to a corrupt Firefox profile file. You don't need to uninstall and reinstall Firefox, which would do nothing if you also didn't delete old files. It would just reinstall with the existing corrupt profile.

I'm assuming you tried re-setting your Yahoo home page? Can be done easily by click and dragging the Yahoo favicon or URL over Firefox home page icon, and clicking Yes in the Set Homepage popup?

If that doesn't work, then you need to either create or replace Firefox profile files with an existing working one. First, the quick method. If all your Firefox setups are essentially the same, then you can just borrow one from your other computer.

Backup your existing Firefox bookmarks. Then download MozBackup and use to copy or backup an existing Firefox install on one of your other working computers. Copy the file to a USB drive or CD, and use that to restore the profile on the computer with a corrupt profile using MozBackup once again. Restore the bookmarks if they are unique.

The other method is to create a new profile replacing the corrupt one. However, you will have to reinstall any Firefox extension addons and settings. First, backup your bookmarks. Then, hold down Windows Key+R, and in RUN, type Firefox -p and ENTER. Follow the steps to create a new profile, and set that one as your default.

Import your bookmarks and reinstall any extensions. In the future, you many want to use MozBackup to save a copy of each Firefox profile locally, should they ever get corrupted and need to be replaced.
  • If you or they have upgraded to the "new" yahoo mail it doesn't work with Firefox. Had the same problem. Google and you will see all the people who are having the same problem.

I went back, and per one of the forum members changed my browser from the tools bar to trick yahoo into believing I didn't have the appropriate browser for the "new" yahoo mail, clicked no to upgrade and I went back to the classic yahoo that works with firefox perfectly.

Which BTW thanks to the forum member for that tip, it was priceless!

Since the new new yahoo mail allows and admits to scanning of everyone's mail and reporting it to the gov......I am going to stick with the classic yahoo mail as looooong as I can!
  • 2 questions. On the offending system, can you reach Yahoo when using IE? When using FF, can you reach other websites?
