Had a RV/Truck specific Garmin that I hated, you couldn't differentiate between a truck and an RV, so you were constantly unable to plot a route that traveled over "No Commercial Traffic/No Truck Traffic" roads. What a pain.
I went back to a auto oriented Garmin Nuvi 2539. I loaded the Low Overhead from a site, and other Points of Interest, and campgrounds from POI factory. It's worked just fine so far.
However I never use it as a route planner. I plot out my routes in Basecamp and transfer them to the Garmin, then I double check them to make sure they're correct. Asking a GPS to take you somewhere and then relying on it to do so correctly usually is an exercise in frustration.
Very good points about not going on commercial roads. That's what I'm wondering about the RV choice of the Rand McNally. Is it anymore useful then the auto GPS, but different enough for the commercial side of travel?
Google maps and route planning is very new to us. I am trying to absorb them as much as possible. But I also would like to get an up dated GPS device as well.
Didn't I read one of your posts somewhere that you have to rely on your own route planning because your DW "Peggy" is worse at it? LOL (I think it was you, but no disrespect intended if it was not you, I've been scouring over old posts on my interested topics).
Thanks for your input, it'll be useful.
Thanks
Normy
(P.S. my DW never drove my 5th wheel or MH, she says she'll drive the Tow vehicle now, I'm holding her to it!!)
