As you have discovered, DirecTV will not activate service for short term usage. However, you dome is capable of receiving the programming from either DirecTV or Dish. You don't say what brand antenna you own but some are simple to change and some require special software. If you can find out what make and model dome you have I could give you additional information.
If you are able to change your dome over to a Dish setup, Dish offers a pay-as-you-go service. You must purchase the receiver (usually less than $100) and then sign up for the PAYG when you are ready to watch satellite. You can turn it on for as little as 30 days. If you don't need it for the entire 30 days you can call Dish, have the service disconnected and they will hold a "days credit" but no refunds.
Thank you! WE have a Kingdome (?) and a antenna that pops up. 1 digital TV and the others are analog. DTV only allows suspension 2x/yr. We are not full timers so this isn't good for us and dont want satellite at the house. We ended up ordering a Dish receiver because of their pay as you go. Hoping that works for us. Thanks for all advise.
