RV stereo short?

I am having an issue with the Sony Radio in my RV. It has a hookup to a 10 cd changer. Sometimes the cd player will work ok, but now the radio just stopped working completely. We were on our way home from a trip and the cd changer stopped completely.

Today I turned the radio on and the cd's played ok for a bit then shut off. Can't get sound at all once again. Is this probably an internal short of some sort. They don't make these radio's anymore that have a cd changer plug......

Should I jusr replace the radio and put a one cd player in and forget about using the changer?

Shorts blow fuses, Loose connections do what you observe.

On my motor home the Pioneer radio did exactly that.. Turned out to be working fine.

However on my RV the "House" radio is a 120 volt home theater device, also Pioneer, very nice, many advanced features.. no need to list

    But the SPEAKERS... are shared

A relay box (Which on my Workhorse chassis W Series is behind the parkign brake pedal,, but in truth could be mounted most anywhere) selects HOUSE or DASH radio based upon the status of the ignition key accessory circuit.

Well, there is a line of RCA cables (like the red/white/yellow video/audio cables) all were firmly connected.. What I failed to notice was a pair or 3 MOLES plugs right above them (Multi pin milky white plastic things) These are latching plugs.

Pressed one, Heard the latches go SNAP (lock into place) and now the only problem is I have to pay the barber to cut my hair once again.
  • I have a 'TIN' ear, but even i can hear the difference between a good CD and some of the files on youtube

besides why go thru the trouble of hunting and downloading 100's of songs you already have on CD

YES i would probably just buy a new single slot CD in dash unit,
i put a Sony in this RV a few years ago
a 12 or 24 cd case has holds more music than your 10 CD changer, and takes up very little space

and many have a USb input port, so you can copy (rip) your favorite CDs to files and put them on a cheap memory stick
    100's of Mp3 songs on a $4 2gig memory stick
  • Aren't CD's going away as fast as 8 track tapes did? I'd be more interested in replacing it with a bluetooth compatible device so I could stream from my phone. I burned all my CD's to a hard drive and sold them. About any song you want is on Youtube.
  • It sounds like a loose connection somewhere. A short would be blowing fuses. I'd pull the radio out and check all the wires and connections behind it.
IF you need a new one, I had the same problem trying to find a radio to control my changer. I found numerous ones for sale on ebay; used of course. I got a nice Sony with changer control, blue tooth, and a USB input used for $40. So, don't give up on the changer.
