You don't "need" something like Calibre, but it does make life easier if you have lots of books and want to organize them.
The tablet should show up when you connect it to a USB port. If nothing else you could connect the tablet and then reboot the computer leaving the tablet plugged it, and see if that does it. If not, then you might know why they gave it to you. :)
