Satelite dish for DirectTV genie

We have DirectTV in our house. When we go camping we are thinking about taking our DVR so we can watch TV. I have the genie in my house. I was given a Panasonic satelite dish, which is probably at least 5 years old. I am wondering if anyone knows if this dish would work with the genie or do I need a special dish.
  • I suspect that the Genie is SWM only technology. So that old, I assume 18 inch round dish is totally worthless for you. Go online and find a retailer and order the correct antenna, tripod and the rest of the stuff you will need. It will cost you about $175.00.
  • In my experience you want the same dish in your RV as in your house so you don't have to go through the reconfiguration menus every time. Plug and play.
  • You don't need the same dish in your RV that you have in your home but the dish you describe will not work with the Genie (this receiver requires DirecTV SWM technology) without adding some additional hardware. This is not expensive, just different. You can find the info you need that will allow you to update that antenna to SWM here, http://www.winegard.com/kbase/upload/2452242.pdf or, my recommendation, you can use one of the current DirecTV SWM antennas without the hassle of the additional hardware. The rest of the setup is the same as the old setup you suggest but without additional hardware or issues.
  • Check out Ebay, lots of used and new dishes for sale on there. Probabl some receivers as well.
  • See if you can catch up with a DirecTV installer. Tell him what you need and offer to buy from him. Most I have run across are easy to deal with. Keep a little cash handy.
