Our motorhome is satelite ready. We have direct tv at home and plan on purchasing the xtra box to put in the MH. My question is we will start out with a stand alone 18" dish/tripod instead of the roof...

Just slightly off topic but have you considered using one of those portable receivers that finds the satellite automatically. We have the new G2 unit and it works well. If you are used to a dome unit it will be a nuisance to try to manually align a dish.
