Satellite Dish

What is available these days for roof-top satellite dishes? I have an older model Motosat, now out of business, which works fine but I know I can't get software updates for the controller or factory assistance should I have any problems. I have looked at the Winegard Traveler and have seen some black HD dishes recently but don't know the brand. I would appreciate any suggestions so I can be ready when and if needed.

I have obtained spare parts for my Motosat and replaced the F1 roof base dish with a later model with a newer UCB. Now have a spare D3 and Hughes HN7000S modem. So hope I am good to go for a few more years as we like to boondock away from cell service. I am member #98 on www.datastormusers.com which helps with any issues I have. Also there are several who have Datastorm parts for resale. Checkout http://www.oregonrv.net/ and go to the link dmarr.com on his site for parts and software. Don has all you will need to stay online. He also works to update the Sat. Tables.

The original post above was a discussion about TV antennas. The second post is related to the MotoSAT Datastorm which is satellite internet. There are parts and software available for the MotoSAT TV antennas and the datastormusers.com group does discuss TV as well but the 2 antenna types are not anything alike or interchangeable.

  • We have a Winegard Travler on the MH. We love it. We also have a Tailgator for our TT. Love it to. Travler is dumb stupid easy one button setup. Tailgator only works with 211K single tuner receiver. If you want two tuners, you have to go with the Travler.
  • Really like our Winegard Trav'ler. In four years (5-6 months per year on the road) there have only been two or three times that we had tree interference.
  • I know you asked about roof top dishes but here's an alternative.

I recently pickup a Dish Tailgator automatic portable dish. It weighs 10lbs and easy to deploy or move to get away from obstacles. It works weel. Also known as the Qube.

The fully black antennas are made by RF Mogul but the Winegard Trav'ler for Dish Network also has a black dish. RF Mogul is run by the former owners of MotoSAT. As long as your MotoSAT continues to work you should not need to do anything and RF Mogul may well be able to update your current antenna controller should it need to be done down the road.
You can find them at RF Mogul
  • I think it's safe to say that the majority of RVers with automatic rooftop dishes are using Winegard Trav'lers. They are work well for many of us. The black ones are from RF Mogul, the company formed by the people who used to be at Motosat. I've read good things about those, also.
