IMO, sat internet is for people who know exactly what they want--and are willing to pay for it. The sat data speeds quoted above are similar to a mediocre 3G connection--like mine. Moreover, the latency mentioned will make surfing difficult and skype more or less unusable. That said, these speeds are plenty good for bulk downloading and I believe overnight sat use still does not count towards data limits.
That same $400/month will buy a heck of a lot of 4G data use--not to mention the twenty grand saved. The connection will be MUCH faster and the coverage area these days is surprisingly good, especially with VZ.
However, there are still vast areas of north america not covered by VZ (which has the best coverage), and only sat data will work there. These places typically would require a two-hour drive over dirt roads to get to. My own experience is that pretty much anywhere within a half-hour's drive of landline telephone service likely has some sort of cell signal to be found nearby.
