Satelllite Radio Antenna

Has anyone installed a Sat Radio antenna on a fiberglass motor home roof? Did you have any loss of signal? How did you secure it to the roof? I'm think about using a 2 part epoxy. I contacted Sirrus customer service/tech support, they were no help, they just read from a script.

Thanks
Chuck
  • For my Sirius radio I put the antenna in the overhead cabinet above the passenger and ran the cable down the window pillar to behind the dash. The satellite signal makes it through the fiberglass roof just fine.
  • Put mine on the roof with Eternabond and ran the wire in through the corner of the slide out. No holes I didn't get good results when mine was inside under the fiberglass so it went up on the roof.

+1. They see through fiberglass fine.
  • I just installed a Browning XM antenna on an 8' painters pole with my WFR Moble clamped to the ladder. The pole is in 3 sections. The yellow portion is clamped, the next section is where the Browning is mounted, & the inner section is for the Mobile. XM reception is terrific. I used a slip on 3/4" PVC tee clamped to the pole with a 6" 3/4" black plastic pipe threaded in for the Browning. The painters pole was procured @ Lowe's. It has an external clamping mechanism vs twisting the pole sections.

Totally agree and if it doesn't work then you can go for other options. No leaks.

  • I've created a small ground plane on the roof of my fiberglass MH by securing a piece of stainless steel (5" x 10") to the roof using 3M tape made for gluing trim pieces (moldings, etc) to cars. I figure if its meant to keep moldings glued on through car washes it should do fine with a thin piece of metal on the roof.

I used a piece of stainless that a magnet will stick to and now I have a place for my magnetic mount cellular antenna as well as my XM antenna. You can buy the tape here: 3M Trim Tape
  • Pour yourself a stiff drink and bite the bullet and get out your drill.

You will need a one foot diameter aluminum disc (the bottom of a pie tin works); this becomes the ground plane for your antenna.

Drill he required holes in the ground plane and the roof of your MH and mount the antenna with the supplied screws.
  • I'm making an assumption that by "Sat radio" you mean Sirius/XM... if I'm wrong ignore the rest.

I have done it, no issues. I used double-sided tape for holding the antenna, some Eternabond for cable running across roof and down access hole in front cap. Never has moved, no leaks.

No signal loss that I've found. Could be wrong, but have used the same sort of basic small square antenna on a windowsill at home and in the rear window deck of a car with no loss of signal. In any case works fine for me.
  • You will have better results with a Marine Antenna. Here is another Marine High Gain Version. The problem with the standard antenna is finding a way to attach it & the fact that it may need a ground plane.

I've used mine by tossing it on the roof (while stopped) but prefer a permanent mount.
