Good luck on your quest for an amateur radio and license. But don't stop at just 2 meters, You can use longer wave lengths for some truly long range communication. Just remember to get a license first, and to operate in the bands that your license allows.
Just to reiterate, the fines and penalties for operating in the amateur radio bands without a license are substantial. Typically in the $7,500 to $10,000 range along with confiscation of your equipment. Amateur radio operators are self policing, and will report violators to the FCC for investigation and prosecution.
