should I upgrade to win 10?

I have a laptop with win 8.1. I am not a heavy user. My old laptop had xp, which I thought was really user friendly. Win 8.1 not so much.

If I upgrade from 8.1 to 10, will I see much difference? Is it more user friendly?
Really don't want an upgrade headache if there's not much difference.

We love Win-10 and we previously had Win-8.1 which we did not care for. You will like Win-10 if you previously had Win-7. Although there are some who do not like it but never mentions specifics, other than the auto updates use there cell data allotments.
Under Windows 10, Microsoft transmits and receives a considerable amount of data to/from your computer besides updates. You can control much of this, including turning off automatic updates, by installing this software. You can turn updates back on when you're connected to free WiFi.

You can also turn on the "Metered Connections" feature of Windows as described at Lifehacker. Any WiFi connection you designate as "metered" will be blocked from receiving updates.
  • I'm with you, still liking my XP desktop. Didn't have 8.1 more than a week so can't speak to any comparison. What I did right away is
-Read Windows 10 For Dummies, cover to cover
    -disabled Cortana
    -disabled Onedrive
-added shortcuts to my start menu for all my favorites
-added shortcuts for Edge and Chrome to start menu
-removed all uninteresting apps (thats what they call programs now)
-learned how to use touch screen options

If you still want IE it is there just not near the top.
I think if you do the above you will find the transition OK. Once you learn what Cortana and OneDrive are then you can make up your own mind to restart. I haven't.
So far liking Windows 10 as I have it set up.

  • I like Win 10 so far. I upgraded a desktop and a laptop from Win 7 when the upgrade first came out and I really like the layout of 10. I typically surf the net, store and edit pictures, and watch some TV on them but find it's a bit more stable that 7. I did lose MS Office on one PC but it was retained on the other...I'm assuming that had something to do with a product key.
