signing into gmail

Keep in mind that if you sign out of Gmail you are signing out of anything Google - Google Drive, Blogger, Google + (if anyone uses that), etc. on that computer. To use those and gmail again you have to sign your wife's account out and sign back in.

As an alternative there is always switch user functionality. This can be accessed by Windows-L or from the start menu. This way, both of you can use the same applications on either machine, but your files and browser preferences will be well separated.

If you don't want to sign out all the time, just have your browser dump your cookies each time you quit the browser. There are plenty of add ons that you can customize your cookies. I keep some cookies for sites I want to stay signed into and dump all other cookies when I quit. This also dumps all tacking cookies etc..

Actually you can both sign in without signing each other out, and within the same browser. Open a new tab in your browser and like mentioned above, click the blue circle person. Click "Add account" and sign in with the second account.

When you want to look at your own email and other apps, simply click the blue person and select the account you want to view.

I use Firefox for my G-mail access and the wife uses Internet Explorer. We both can be signed in at the same time on the same computer.

DW and I do that all the time when traveling. We only take my computer, so she uses it to access her email.
