Sirius radio antenna connection?

In our Class C we get lousy AM and FM reception with the fender mounted antenna. I want to take our portable Sirius radio receiver and mount it on the dash and use the cigarette lighter for power but need a solution for the antenna.

I do not want to make any holes in the roof or unit if I do not have to but really want to be able to get a good signal regardless of the direction we are travelling.

Any suggestions from folks out there?

It needs a clear view of the sky at GHz RADIO frequencies, NOT optical light frequencies.

Here are the Sirius flying and XM geostationary satellite locations.

  • Do what I am going to do. Put the antenna in the fiberglass/plastic roof vent above the class c overhead bed, and take the time to run the cable. You can hid it or use a curved wire stapler, or as I plan to do for my backup camera, use plastic wire mold on the ceiling. It looks nice, easy to install and comes in white and tan and has corners and connectors. The vent will work to pass any microwave frequency, same thing is used on a radar dome or Sat TV, unless it is made of metal.

I am mounting two backup cameras in my rear window. One looking down, and one looking back. I am to old to crawl under the MH so I am staying inside. I have run hundreds of feet of wire mold, and it is a professional look and will work well on the ceiling of the MH, and would not hurt the resale value. Can be found at Home Depot or any electrical wholesale store.

DO you have a GPS? Does it work well? Same considerations for antenna.

Most auto makers put it on the roof. but all it really needs is a clear view of the southern sky.. I think Sirrus uses a bird at 101 W. but I may have it confused with the other service, One uses 101 the other 110/119
  • if it is a motorhome you speak of, there are a lot of holes to engine compartment via the firewall I am sure there would be away out through that and then with the antenna being magnetic should be able to stick on bumper or other steel front surface
  • For 6 of the 10 years we had our 22' Class C, the Sirius Sat antenna lived under the air bed in the cab over bunk.

Because Sirius Sat signals occupy a frequency band very near the Wi-Fi band, very few of the materials in an RV "house" will block or degrade the signals.

I would try it in the cab over and in the upper cabinets to find a suitable location before I would look at putting it anywhere outside.

Our new RV and our Miata towed both have Sirius in their in-dash radios.

  • If you buy a antenna for your radio that has a magnet type base
go buy a plate that goes over a power junction box and put some roof
sealer tar under the plate and fasten it to the roof of the rv. Then
run the wire from the antenna thu a window to the radio. Make sure
youput some of the roofing tar on the wire every foot or so so it
will not flop in the wind. the antenna will lock on the plate and
stay in place. my antenna has been there for years and never moved.
you can buy the antenna from most places that sell the sat radios.
The antenna will bring in a good signal. The antenna comes with
about 15 ft. of antenna wire with it and it and connector
that just snaps on to the sat radio. hope this helps.

  • our S/XM antenna lives in the compartment in front of and above the driver's seat. works well. the satellite transmissions are high enough in frequency that they will have little trouble penetrating the shell of the MH. if the antenna has a magnetic base just out down a metallic pie pan for it. experiment with antenna placement and you should find several spots that will work well.
