Skyworth TV/DVD bad sound

Well, hopefully someone here will read this and learn from my mistake.

I bought a 19 inch Skyworth TV/DVD unit from RoadTrucker.com. They highly recommended this unit as reliable. I received it quickly, and it was not damaged at all.

They recommend you try it inside your house first...good thing I did, because I would have wasted a key turn by taking out to my Class B rig.

The volume is not sufficient to hear, even at full volume. The volume scale goes from 0-100. From 0-50, there is a noticeable increase. From 50-100, not much. At 100, I can't hear it from more than 4 feet away.

I emailed the seller and sent him a YouTube video of my experience. He forwarded my video to the domestic distributor, who said "no defect." The guy from RoadTrucker.com was nice, and will take the return without charging me the normal restocking fee, but I'll probably have to pay return shipping.

Here is the video...listen to it and tell me what you think.

So, the search goes on for a 19 inch TV/DVD combination. I need this size to fit a particular space in my very small RV, and I don't have a place near the TV for a separate DVD player, so I'd like the combo unit.

I've been reading here about Pure Sine Wave Inverters, and just using a regular TV. Do these inverters make any noise? It might be something useful, because then my girlfriend could recharge her laptop, and we could get a small printer too.

Ideas???

Thanks,

Gerard
  • Who is 'they' that recommend something I'll bet nobody here has ever heard of?

Find something real and don't mess with this junk that is unheard of. I saw something at Best Buy yesterday that was around the size you're looking for. I rarely see them above 19".

For the inverters: what noise... Fan? PSW are by far better than MSW performance wise. Some have fans, some not, but about 300w the fans are nowhere near as objectionable as the smaller ones with either.
  • Do yourself a favor and buy a decent TV and a Blu-Ray player. DVDs will soon be a dinosaur. Doing a search on Amazon I found this player that will fit almost anywhere:

    Samsung BD-H5100 Blu-Ray Disc Player

    It measures only 8" x 11" x 1.5",
  • Q. What's a Skyworth?
    A. Not much.
    Sorry, couldn't help myself.

    I'm assuming this is a 12V TV?

Yes, 12 Volt TV/DVD combo, designed for trucks and RV's. Has the "Brick" if you want to use 120 Volt house current.

Good picture on cable and DVD, but the sound never got loud enough. I've never had any TV, even a 4 inch one, that had a max sound level so low.

Ok, maybe I CAN find a place for something this small...the cubby where the old 9 inch TV/VHS player sat is 12 inches wide. I'm converting the space to a nightstand for the bedroom, and I can add a shelf at the very top with a tiny bit of room for a unit like this....

    Thanks for the tip!

These 12 Volt TV's by Skyworth, Jensen, and Naxa are apparently fairly common in the larger truck stops...I saw one in a truckstop in Barstow, Ca. The truckers know them.

I just purchased a Dynex to replace the main CRT job in this RV... Low volume there too.. But long about 70 it gets good (The Toshiba runs at around 20).

It is still in test mode (Sitting atop the bird seed) I put it in next week.
  • I saw one of these Skyworth TV's in a boat shop yesterday so asked about it. The guy said they quit carrying them because of several complaints about bad audio, and several had died within a few months. Didn't ask about out of warranty service.
