Slimline aiming - V's in the trees

I found a V in the trees for my Slimline HD DTV. The red arrow shows where the Lnb arm is pointing.. at only 34° of elevation. The actual signal comes in from a much higher angle.

I'm getting around 83% signal on the 101 whereas 93-95% is usual sans obstructions. The 99 and 103 sats are strong enough too.

  • Just a little thing to know about aiming a dish antenna that might help you sometime. If you look at the dish mounting, the flat plate on the back of the dish is perpendicular to the line for the satellite. whereas the dish itself seems to be pointed a bit lower. The signal actually bounces off the dish to the LNB at a bit of an angle, but the skew plate on the back actually gives you the true direction. Like the others said, the angle is actually a lot higher than it looks like.

If the situation warrants, I use it first to determine where to set up my tripod, and then to get the antenna aimed in the best direction.

I could not find SAToolzDirecTV on Google Play Store for Android phones. I use Satellite AR app for spotting the DirecTV satellites.

Back when I was playing with SAT TV I did the same thing. Had a favorite spot way back in the woods and lots of tree cover... I climbed up into the tree and cut out a rather large hole there and hit the right spot. Then on the ground I marked where my truck would always be parked to use my portable dish setup on the hard bed cover I was using to set the SAT Dish on... My markers was a pile of rock I found around the camp site...

Worked out great for us haha. I went to that particular spot in the woods to camp which was creekside on a small creek. Love waking up in the mornings to a nice bon fire and watching the fish jump drinking my morning fresh ground and brewed bean coffee...

Haven't been to this spot for a couple of years now and I wonder if my markers are still there haha... They probably are now being used for a fire pit for another camper that has found my camp site... They probably have never looked up and wondered why there is a somewhat large hole in the tree cover...

As soon as the rain stops I'll do that.

  • Cut the tree now, before it gets bigger and more leaves. They are a lot harder to cut when they get bigger also.
  • The signal is coming in 24 degrees higher than the LNB is pointed so you sound like you are mostly in the clear. If the tree breaks out into full leaf you might have a problem.
