3rd vote for "Both".
I actually like the basic navigation on my Android using Google maps better than any of my stand alone or built-in GPS's but it doesn't have as many useful features. I haven't really tried to check it but haven't noticed any additional data usage when the map is active. It DOES, however eat up the battery charge pretty fast.
So.....I use a dedicated GPS for long trips and the smart phone for short trips or side trips or to double check the "main" GPS when I think it's doing something strange (which happens on a fairly regular basis).
