Have to have both. The phone works but often loses signal. Lots of places in this country still without a cell signal. (I know, hard to believe?)
Also you can do lots of other things on the phone while you follow a route on the GPS. I love that I get speed limit info on the GPS as well as really precise data on how fast I'm going. I have a Garmin Diezel.
