No not really, but if you're used to it it is handy, since it operates, if you prefer, hands off, and a glance up gives you the time,date, and which ever widget is running at the moment (my widgets change ever 15 seconds and include personal vacation pics and "stuff" (jpgs, etc.) from all over the net).
The thought is to "save" the dash for those who have it and like using it.
