Was the hard drive plugged into the same AC outlet as the DVR? If not there may be a ground loop issue that takes out the audio section. Try plugging them into the same wall outlet and see what happens.
They share the same outlet in the bedroom. I don't know if the outlet is on a different circuit from the living room TV that has the problem.
