Standard vs Hi Def?

Hi folks could use some impute if you don't mind. I have a Standard Def roof mounted self seeking Directtv Satellite. I love the thing. Problem is it does not get HD. I am looking to upgrade to a Directtv slimline SWM3 dish. My concerns are that HD is harder to pick up than Standard. Has anyone noticed you don't get Satellite reception where you use to? I would really appreciate your experience on the subject.

With Thanks
Ray

  • We upgraded to a Winegard Traveler automatic with Direct. Works great! Did require an additional line to be able to get HD. Yu will not be sorry with the upgrade. Standard looks so poor in comparison on true HD TVs.

I should have said I have a Standard Def roof mounted self seeking Directtv (sic) Satellite dish. Mounted on my roof. What I would like to know is does the HD self finding seeking satellite dish have a harder time finding the HD signal than SD dish? Hope that clears it up.
AFAIK, with Directv you must use a Slimline dish, not an automatic one, to get HD... as you alluded to in your first post.
  • I got what you said, it was the concern about pointing that that got me wondering what you were up to..

It's a possible problem only if you are trying to get through trees because you have a much wider horizontal window to deal with. Other than that it's the same button push that you do now. Frankly I'm surprised yours has lasted this long. I had to replace mine several years ago.

Direct HD still finds 101 and if the skew is correct, then HD will be OK... so it should not take any longer. If your TV is not 30+" and 1080 def not sure I'd bother.

I think there is lots of missing information

You are talking about an automatic, probably 18" antenna on the roof, or something else? If you are asking how hard it is for an auto track HD antenna to do its job, the answer is you simply push a button. Antenna wise it is exactly whats in millions of homes in the US.

If you are referring to setting it up manually, its not allot harder than a single satellite antenna once you do it a few times.

As for the pictures, Chopper Bill is correct. Once you get used to HD, everything else looks broken and you will find yourself skipping SD shows in leiu of something that doesnt cause a headache.

Thanks Jeff. Yeah in my original post I said " I have a Standard Def roof mounted self seeking Directtv Satellite" I should have said I have a Standard Def roof mounted self seeking Directtv Satellite dish. Mounted on my roof. What I would like to know is does the HD self finding seeking satellite dish have a harder time finding the HD signal than SD dish? Hope that clears it up. Still would like to know.

Be careful. Not all automatic dishes are compatible with Directv HD.

Thanks Bobbo I know that, but what I don't know is how hard is it to pick up the HD signal. I have had my SD dish for many years love the thing. But on this up grade will it pick up the satellites as easy and the SD? That's my question. I have all the other questions worked out. Such as this dish I am thinking about getting will sit on the same pedastal as the dish I already have so no drilling of more holes needed. It will also use the same power cables and Coax cable so no running of lines. Only question is how hard is it to get a HD signal????? Ah that's the fly in the ointment

  • Up grade you won't be sorry. Sorry is how SD looks on the new TVs. I had no problems in my conversion.
