My Wal-Mart had the ZTE Z289L (P4P sim) at the Black Friday price of $49 so it appears they offered both the 288 and 289 for the special. The one I purchased is the 289L.
I also ordered one online so I'll see which one shows up. If it is the 288 on the Verizon network I'd be tempted to keep it also and run with both just to improve my network availability chances (advice from Technomadia) since I also plan to work remotely while traveling. I just have a strong concern that the Verizon one is on the more limited pre-pay network.
As far as Straight Talk AT&T data speeds, my PHONE hit 20 mbps download while in rural Maryland. In that same spot, my Straight Talk Verizon phone did not have service as the Verizon pre-pay network did not cover western Maryland.
