Any experience with Straight Talk Hotspot?

I was with Millenicom for about a year. What a dependable service. Never failed to work well: even in the mountains of Montana near Glacier National Park. With Millenicom swallowed up by Verizon, I'm looking for a similarly dependable, inexpensive service. Don't need 20 Gigs; half of that would be fine. For now, Straight Talk is being explored. Would appreciate info and other recommendations.

  • I also had a UMX from ST but had issues with the unit and it finally quit altogether. It never did hold a charge. Recently bought a Verizon jetpack and am happier with that. ST only gives you GB in two-month increments, e.g., 5GB for $50 over two months, which is only 2.5 GB/month. Not much. You don't pay that much more for Verizon. I got 4 GB/month for $50 (plus, of course, the usual Verizon add-on charges).

X2. Here in on the West Coast, I have had good success with this product almost everywhere I have cell coverage (Verizon)

Mellenicom is technically still in business

Verizon acquired customers that have been using resold Verizon service
You want the same signal coverage, then buy service that is on the Verizon system
Whether it is resold by straight talk, or directly from VZW

A newer one that looks interesting is the ZTE Z288L and ZTE Z289L. One is Verizon network and one is AT&T network. Both are 4GLTE but reports are that they are throttled to about 3Gb/s download speed.
  • Straight talk has two Verizon setups one is 3g and a new setup that is 4g. I have the 3g MIFI that works very well on the Verizon network. The only place I had difficulty with slow and poor connections was in the White Mountains of Vermont. As I understand from other forums the new 4g MIFI service is being throttled to a 3MBS download / 1MBS upload. If this is true, that's not much better than 3G.
  • I'm interested in ST's new 4G hotspots but info is limited. From what I've seen so far, they may have hotspot hardware for Verizon, AT&T, and maybe T mobile. Limited results look like speeds may be throttled to around 3.5Mbs max. Take a look at these two threads for some info.
