Do solid state drives last longer? Good question and I'm not sure there is an answer yet.. SS drives are more or less immune to hardware failure and can survive an inpact that would shatter the platter on a regular drive.. But they do fail.. Eventually,,, or so I'm told.
The Samsung SSD I installed in my laptop came with a 10 year full replacement warrantee so I think the manufacturer believes that it will last at least that long. I expect that the drive will be technologically outdated by that time. The biggest advantage to SSD is the speed IMHO. No rotational or head positioning latency. I put SSDs in all my laptops for the mechanical robustness mentioned by wa8yxm, but the speed improvement is a major bonus. Have conventional HDDs in all my tower systems.
