Streaming Movies

I have to do some more studying, but maybe some of you can give me some basic.

I just put a new TV in the lower level and the DW wants to be able to get movies down there, ones not available on On Demand I guess.

We have a WiFi on for the desk top. The New TV has a 360 X Box and Wii hooked up to it.

She thinks that somehow movies can be streamed from the internet via WiFi thru the X Box and then on the TV.

Is that doable?

thanks
  • I use my computer, mate it with an hdmi cord, change the display in the control panel to connect to projector so the tv gets a signal and use this if you don't want to pay extra, since you already pay for the internet. Sometimes you have to let it buffer for a half hour or so depending on your speed, same with anything else though. Give it a try

    Project free tv.
  • The simple answer to the OP's question is that it is very easy to watch streaming video from Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and other sources using game consoles, such as an Xbox, or, better yet using a device designed for the purpose such as a Roku.

The second part of that answer, however, is that you had better have an internet connection other than a campground's wifi since those usually lack the necessary bandwidth and many CG owners frown upon such activities.

A 4G cell phone signal used either through a phone's hotspot or a device such as a MiFi can provide excellent video, but you will have to expect data usage to be at least 1GB per 2 hours of viewing.

You will need to have a big enough data plan to do this over the internet. Some folks use their cell phone for this but this ties up your cell phone.

I would get a separate system like the Verizon MIFI or one of the other several units like this available. Having 4G capability would be best solution but of course 4G is not available everywhere. We use the Verizon 2200 Mifi unit for our internet use all over the east part of the US and serves us well getting on the internet.

I am not a fan of tapping into the open WIFI connections you find everywhere. Always afraid it will bite me in the end.

The local camp grounds frown on high usage of their WIFI connections for down streaming things. This takes away the WIFI from the others camp ground users big time...

We use the OTA Batwing antenna to pull in the local town high def Natl Broadcast HDTV signals for all of our HDTV watching. This is free to use and we pick up 6-36 full blown wide screen HDTV Signals just about anywhere we go here on the East side of the US. Much better to watch full blown HDTV verses the cable TV channels offered by the camp grounds. Of course this is only the National TV networks so when we want to watch cable channel stations we will use the camp ground connection or downstream from the internet.

If movies is all you want to watch then pick up a elcheapo DVD player from WALMART for $20 and hookup to your bedroom TV and bring along movies with you to watch... We do that as well... Always got to have a PLAN B when camping...

  • Yes.

The recent Xbox and Wii can connect to the internet as well as services like Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, Amazon...etc. You can get movies from these services.

One caution, some of the RV park WiFi services are not compatible with the way Wii and Xbox access the internet. You may need to have a router and laptop to get on to the internet and then use the Wii or Xbox.
  • Yes. I have been told by my DIL that the Wii does enable you to do that. You will need to subscribe to Netflix or Hulu to get the better stuff. It does require a good wifi feed, I have been told 5 mbps at a minimum.

I am sure that someone with experience will chime in and I am interested in hearing the experts. Lots of experience on here.

I bought a Roku box for my connection at home which provides the streaming capability.
