Subwoofer in MH

My Sunseeker Class C came with a Jensen in-dash head unit that is also the house stereo. There is a Jensen subwoofer unit mounted inside the forward dinette base. The dinette base is fully enclosed. Shouldn't there be an opening in the base to let the sound out?

If so, how big? I would use a heating grille to cover the hole.

EDIT TO ADD:
Just to be clear, I'm talking about the dinette base. It is completely enclosed, and a separate self-contained subwoofer unit is inside it.

This is what it looks like. This is inside the enclosed dinette base:
  • Agree. The short answer is you don't need a hole in the dinette for the subwoofer. Low frequency sound can travel through materials such as wood. If it was powerful enough, you could even put it in your storage bay.
  • Your supposed to feel it, not hear it. I'd leave it alone too.
  • i would say the woofer has plenty of space for air movement and crisp sound

but it will suffer volume loss inside the closed dinette seat box

yes you can put an opening in the dinette box to allow more volume

remember to vacuum the dust out of the dinette box every few months

once you open the box and install a grill dust will settle inside the dinette box

I'm not sure I fully understand. Is it not working, or not working well? If Jensen designed it that way, I'd be inclined to leave it alone. Not that J makes anything of quality...

Jensen has no say in where Forest River decided to put it.
    :)

  • I have one in my RV, but it's just sitting beneath the dinette. For a cheap system it sounds great in the RV. I use headphones when playing online games, but it's nice to have decent sound for movies.

Depends on if you want bass or boom. A sealed sub box provides a crisper bass. A ported box provides more volume as it allows more movement of the cone. The only real advantage to porting besides volume is cooling extends the life of the subwoofer.
