Tailgater sat dish in an analog rig

I'm a digital girl in an analog rig. I drive a 2000 Holiday Rambler Vacationer. You know, TV in the dash and coax as far as the eye can see. I have that old push-button box that allows me to switch from antenna to VCR to cable to satellite. I use a digital converter box for the antenna, and an RF modulator for my DVD player.

I finally have decided to get a sat dish and settled on DISH's Tailgater. My question is how -- or whether I need to -- to boil down DISH's signal for analog consumption.

A DISH rep yesterday waved me off the VIP211Z receiver and said the older VIP211K will support coax connections. DISH has an SD signal, so I'm not sure whether that till do it, or I still need an RF modulator.

Or am I in the tall grass?

  • I had to laugh. I meant on that table of connections listed on the link that you gave me, the descriptors said everything except" coax." I think I can spot a coax connector on the back of the box. But thanks for the giggle.

I am confused. Which of the input / output connections are coax?

On the 211 and 211k, the output to the TV is the third 'F' connector from the left. It's marked "TV Set Out". The 211z does not have that connection.
  • Thanks for the feedback. I'll read those links, Techwriter.

To the bear II, I searched for newer switch boxes a while ago and couldn't find them. Maybe I'll look again.

2oldman, changing out an in-dash TV would require a bit of cabinet construction ... and a big ol' hole in the dash. With a 14-year-old rig that I use only a few months a year (volunteering at national refuges, and state and national parks), I don't want to invest in any more modifications / repairs than I have to. But when volunteering for months in some of these remote areas, I'd like to watch more than my well-worn DVD collection.
  • You can use an RF modulator if the dish box doesn't have a coax out connection.

Other option- Get a new swtch box that uses both rca or coax connections. The dish box will have the yellow, white and red rca out connections to run through the switchbox and then use the TV out coax connection on the switchbox to get to the TV.

You will be ok with the SD signal

We changed out the TV for a flat screen with a built in DVD player... it has HDMI as well as coax, YPR and RCA connections.

With a 211k, you should be able to use its coax connector on your analog TV.

With a 211z, you'll need an RF modulator if you want to connect to your TV with coax.

However, all 211s also have composite video (R, L, Video) outputs that you could also use, but I'm guessing it could be difficult accessing the rear connectors on your TV.
  • You plan on keeping the analogue stuff? Seems easier to change out the tv.
