The dish, arm and LNB are the parts that must be compatible. How you mount that would likely not make any difference. A DirecTV SL3 LNB is not compatible with the Dish service at all and vice versa. However, the original Dish/DirecTV setup was one single round LNB mounted to a round 18" antenna and this setup can be used for either service. For DirecTV that will receive the SD programming only and for Dish you have to pick which 1 of their 3 satellites you want to get programming from.
