How do you receive your internet?

I'm not aware of internet using satellites.

Yes but it also has to do with the quality of the receiving equipment in use. In my limited experience in Florida, some of the equipment is in really BAD shape.

Happens also when I used the wifi off my friends satellite internet and as they get cut off too. They say it happens all the time. I'm in North Central Florida.

Don't know what the lottery uses for internet service but they go down in heavy rain here too. Kind of fun to watch late at night when the cut off time is near and watching the people wanting to buy lottery tickets freaking out when their service goes down because of the rain.

Once the rain passes it's up and running and lottery sales back on line.

Certainly not a life or death situation.
I was just wondering what could cause it to happen in this area.

Internet service can be delivered by telephone line (DSL), cable, fibre optic cable, wirelessly (WiFi), and satellite. Being at the equator has nothing to do with any delivery method except satellite, and the equator is the closest point on the earth to geostationary satellites so actually satellite internet should be best at the equator .... assuming that is where the satellite transmission beam is aimed.

ALL electronic communication is likely to use a satellite somewhere in it's transmission path; even some fairly short trips that you would never believe.

In the case of Florida, there is land access from only one direction: North. Other places can have cable or fiber come in from 4 directions, N,S,E and W. This contributes, in part, to more coming in from above.

BAD assumption.

The satellites are located and the "beam is aimed" at the point of largest population density. There just ain't much worthy of commercial interest in the band around the earth where central and south Florida is located.....except maybe Miami. There are almost NO paying customers located on the equator.

And it IS all about money. The won't provide satellite service to an area where there is nobody to pay for it.

I had problems, finally found out about the forums at http://www.dslreports.com/- they have specific forums for ISPs. Got on, talked to the Brighthouse guy. and they sent the lead tech out, changed everything at our place, finally found the bad hardware a few miles away.
Now I get rock solid 100Mbps down, 10 up (and there are 2 tiers faster, if I want).

And- no part of the Internet is via satellite, unless you have a sat internet provider. It's all fiber optics- satellites have far too much latency.

Agreed. And rarely is voice routed through satelite unless you are looking for a long delay. If you have ever talked over a satelite phone it is a very awkward experience unless you are going thru a Low Earth Satelite. Thats why consumer lines are all through microwave (mostly in mountainous areas) and fiber/copper every where else.
