The Weather Channel--what happened??

We have always use TWC on the highway and at home via Direct TV--but we also watch NBC. I saw where Direct TV told TWC to 'take a hike' because of a contract dispute, but I havn't heard why NBC quit using them. Maybe the same reason? Weather Nation is the weather channel on Direct TV presently, but they are 'third string' and seem not to have any local info.I've Googled the topic but found nothing. What's the latest? jim
  • I think TWC got too full of themselves. They asked customers to write their congressmen about the loss of their "vital" service. Rightfully, DirecTV got tired of TWC's non-weather related shows...the filler. Of course, one can look at sites like the National Weather Service or Weather Underground for equal or better coverage. The Weather Underground WonderMap is really informative. It's my go-to source and they have an app for phones too.
  • And as a Dish customer, when their TWC contract is up for renewal, I hope they take the same stance that Direct TV did.
  • With all the weather info that can be obtained off the internet, why do we need a TV channel that shows a small amount of useful weather information and lots of pictures of cars stuck in snow, etc? When I want real weather information I go to Weather Underground.
  • X2. Yep It's really the East Coast Weather Channel.

From what I've read, the Weather Channel had been getting 13 cents per subscriber from Direct TV the past couple years. The Weather Channel wanted another penny but DTV wanted to cut the amount per subscriber by 20 percent - or roughly to 10 cents. Which is obviously a hard nose position to take.

It's not a much watched channel outside weather events. Real popular channels on DTV get up near a dollar per subscriber on DTV.

I suspect you'll not see the Weather Channel back on DTV since competitors are moving in. Accuweather is supposed to be putting together a package, but I wonder if a weather company can do the "glitz" required to make for interesting TV.

Yep, TWC should have been called the east coast wx channel.

  • The Weather Channel is owned by NBC Universal. After buying TWC, they laid off many of the existing staff in favor of bringing in their own people.
