There's no such thing as privacy anymore

I've been thinking of getting a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee overland to replace our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. So I did a build and price. Also we replaced our kitchen faucet and also checked prices.

Our email in box was filled with more Jeep dealers then I knew were around here. We got email's from Lows and home depot on the faucet.
One dodge dealer got our unlisted phone number and called us.:M You can be sure we won't be buying a Jeep from that dealer. When and if we do buy I will call that dealer and let him know why we didn't buy from them.

  • You want to see something really spooky?
Go to Home Depot and stop by the walk-in bathtub display they have. It's like ones they advertise on TV all the time for older folks.
Stop by the display, open the door and lean inside.
Within 2 days you email getting spammed with ads for those tubs.
  • FWIW, Whenever I'm internet shopping I go to the tool bar and open an Incognito Window (Chrome term) and never receive any unwanted popups or spam from sites I have been to while browsing. I think IE calls it In Private Browsing.
  • I agree... privacy has been gone for quite a while.

Having said that, one positive is you know of more Jeep dealerships in your area than you knew existed.

Interesting that one got your unlisted number. Tells me unlisted isn't really unlisted.

  • Most businesses have an unsubscribe link in the fine print at the bottom of the email. Some also have an update preferences link where you can opt to receive fewer emails. I have put these to good use and am receiving far fewer emails these days.
If I were the OP I'd give the dealer the chance to remove the unlisted number from their system. Any salesman should be able to delete it. If they can't/won't there is always the option of blocking their phone number and setting up a spam filter. Also be sure to let them know they have lost your business.

Gmail does a really good job of sending spam to a spam folder. All the solicitations I get have an 'unsubscribe' option. Use it.
  • We are learning we need atleast two E mails. One we give out freely. The other is guarded. It is the world we live in now. Not always better
  • Yep, nothing is private anymore. Just mark the junk as spam and move on.

But, it won't bother some people, they post their daily toilet schedule on Facebook. ;)
  • When you put all your contact info out there in order to do your inquiries you didn't read the five pages of fine print that gives them permission to use it and sell it to others.
  • Thank for the Internet.
One time I wanted to contact a friend, who I meet once a year at Boy Scouts camps.
He has unique name and I knew the city he lives, so in the matter of 90 seconds I learned names and ages of his household members, had picture of his house, with its value and quick review of his criminal record.
Than I have other handle I used more on the net.
You punch it on google to get 40,000 + hits. Only few are not mine ;)
  • I agree with you. My Hotmail inbox often gets flooded with junk mail because of some inquiry I may have made with one company. All I can do is delete all the junk mail one by one. I do have several email accounts, two of which I use solely with my regular contacts. Others, I consider throw-aways when they get attacked by too many unwanted emails.
