I used to use Thunderbird. It was and still is one of the best stand alone email clients. But there are better solutions out there now...
Do you have an Android smartphone and/or tablet? A better mail client is
Inbox by Gmail.
No need to change your current email address. Just open a Gmail account (if you don't already use Gmail), forward all your email to your Gmail account, set Gmail's replay address as your current email address, then use Inbox by Gmail for your mail on your phone or tablet. Use the web page on your Windows machines, it looks and works exactly like the Android app. I won't go back to what I used to use.
