Thunderbird updates

Just got bitten by the latest Thunderbird update (v17.0.8). Seems the update changed the e-mail server from POP to IMAP. Had to compare my laptop with the desktop to see what changed.

The cure was to set up a new account with the correct e-mail server. Plus in making the changes found that the Help documentation was not current with v17.0.8. They need better organization, IMHO.

There also doesn't seem to be a clean way to move folders from the old account to the new account. At least I haven't found one yet.

Mozilla is no longer developing "new features" for TB, but stability and security updates are actively released on a regular basis. See blog About the future of Thunderbird.
  • OK, I reversed the order. Actually, I would have recommended manually changing the protocol settings back from IMAP to POP3. Unless you originally set TB to save copies of your emails on the server in POP, your locally stored emails could be lost if you delete the old account when you setup a new account. IMAP saves the emails automatically, and all your client is doing is syncing between the two. In fact, I use IMAP for all my emails except Outlook.com as the free version does not support IMAP. MS uses their own proprietary IMAP like protocol in their Windows Mail client.
  • I am not having any problems using Thunderbird with POP or IMAP accounts after the recent update. No accounts were changed and everything works as it always has.

Mozilla has not dropped development of Thunderbird; they have only changed its priority of development compared to other projects. They continue to update it, provide support, and integrate new features. Thunderbird is open source software and there is a large community of independent developers who advance it.
  • Gee, I have version 17.0.08 and am still using a POP server with no problems. Guess I'm confused, maybe happily so.
  • Once you setup IMAP, it should re-sync your previous emails. If not, you could transfer your locally stored emails by clicking one, then using CTL+A keys to select all, and drag them over to your new email folder.
  • I have been using Thunderbird for several years.
What other e-mail programs are members using and would be recommended?
