I am not having any problems using Thunderbird with POP or IMAP accounts after the recent update. No accounts were changed and everything works as it always has.
Mozilla has not dropped development of Thunderbird; they have only changed its priority of development compared to other projects. They continue to update it, provide support, and integrate new features. Thunderbird is open source software and there is a large community of independent developers who advance it.
